Discover more about War in the Pacific National Historical Park

War in the Pacific National Historical Park, established in 1978, is a multi-unit protected area on Guam that stands as a solemn tribute to the Pacific Theater of World War II. Unlike any other park in the National Park System, it commemorates the bravery and sacrifices of all who participated in the conflict, including the United States, Japan, and Allied nations. The park is composed of several units, each offering a unique glimpse into the events that unfolded on Guam during the war. Asan Beach, a key site, marks the location of the northern American landings during the recapture of Guam in July 1944. Visitors can walk the shores where American troops landed and view remnants of Japanese fortifications. The Asan Bay Overlook features a Memorial Wall etched with the names of American servicemen and the people of Guam who suffered and died during the war. Ga'an Point offers a view into the fortified positions and artillery installations of the Japanese forces. The T. Stell Newman Visitor Center features interactive exhibits and films that portray the events of the Battle of Guam and the stories of combat veterans and Chamorro people. Piti Guns Unit features three Japanese coastal defense guns installed through Chamorro forced labor. Guam's history is deeply intertwined with World War II. In 1941, Japanese forces captured Guam, and the island remained occupied for four years. The Chamorro people endured immense hardships, including forced labor, imprisonment, and executions. In 1944, American forces launched a successful invasion to retake Guam, resulting in intense fighting and further devastation. The park's preserved sites serve as tangible reminders of these events, helping to preserve Guam's history for future generations.
