Located in the heart of Hagåtña, Guam, Plaza de España is a historical treasure reflecting the island's Spanish colonial era. From 1734, it served as the Spanish Governor's Palace, witnessing centuries of Guam's evolving history. Originally named Plaza de Magalahes, it later became Plaza de España.While much of the original palace was destroyed during the shelling of Hagåtña in World War II, several structures still stand, offering a glimpse into the past. These include the Azotea, an elevated open-air terrace; the Chocolate House, where the governor's wife served chocolate to guests; and the three-arch gate to Almacen (Arsenal). The Plaza also features landscaped gardens, providing a serene environment for visitors.Under Spanish rule, Plaza de España was the center of government and civic activities. After the Spanish-American War in 1898, it became the headquarters of the American administration and the residence of the Naval Governor. The Americans expanded the plaza, adding a baseball field and badminton court. Today, the Kiosko (bandstand) stands where the baseball field once was. The Plaza de España continues to host social and civic functions, including the inauguration of Guam's Governor, underscoring its enduring significance in Guam's history.
