Ypao Beach: Tumon Bay's Tropical Jewel
Discover Ypao Beach in Guam: Pristine sands, clear waters, and a vibrant park blend history and recreation in a tropical paradise.
Ypao Beach, also known as Governor Joseph Flores Beach Park, is a vibrant and historically rich destination on Guam's western coast. The beach boasts soft, white sands and clear turquoise waters, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The waters are part of the Tumon Bay Marine Preserve, which limits fishing and protects marine life. The adjacent Ypao Beach Park is one of Guam's largest and oldest public parks. It features grassy areas, picnic tables, BBQ pits, covered seating, walking paths, and an outdoor shower, making it perfect for families and gatherings. The park also has a bandstand that hosts concerts and events. Historically, the area holds significance as an ancient Chamorro burial ground. In the early 1900s, the U.S. Navy established a leper colony at Ypao, which lasted until 1912. Today, Ypao Beach Park is a lively cultural hub, hosting events like the Guam Micronesia Island Fair and the Japan Autumn Festival. Remnants of ancient Chamorro culture, including latte stones, can also be found. Located on the southern end of Tumon Bay, Ypao Beach offers stunning views, especially towards Two Lovers Point. Its convenient location near hotels and shops makes it easily accessible for tourists.
