Driving

From Hagåtña, take Marine Corps Drive (Route 1) south. Continue onto Route 2 south towards Umatac. The drive is approximately 25 miles and takes about 50 minutes, offering scenic views of Guam's coastline. Once in Umatac, the church is easily visible on the main road. The church is named after St. Dionysius the Areopagite, the first bishop of Athens who was converted to Christianity by St. Paul. Today's San Dionisio Church reflects pre-war architectural styles and stands as a registered historical landmark. Inside, visitors can appreciate religious artwork and stained glass windows that create a serene atmosphere. The church provides a unique insight into the traditions and values of Guam, and the ruins of the old church are located within 50 yards of the current church. Umatac itself is a historically significant village. It is believed that Ferdinand Magellan first made contact with Guam here in 1521. The village served as a chief port for the Spanish, with the Spanish Governor even relocating to Umatac when ships were expected. Forts were constructed to protect the harbor from pirates.
