Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car from Puerto Barrios, take the CA-9 highway heading towards Morales. Continue on CA-9 for approximately 30 kilometers until you reach Morales. From Morales, take the exit onto CA-9 towards the west and continue for another 40 kilometers until you reach the town of Gualán. In Gualán, follow the signs for the road leading to the village of San Juan La Laguna. The road will narrow, and you will start to see signs directing you to Big Rock Falls. The falls are located about 15 km from San Juan La Laguna, and the last part of the journey will be on a dirt road that requires careful navigation. Be prepared for potential rough terrain and drive slowly. Parking is available near the entrance to the falls.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Big Rock Falls using public transportation, start at the main bus terminal in Puerto Barrios. Look for a bus heading towards Morales, which typically departs every hour. After approximately 30 minutes, get off at Morales and transfer to a bus heading to Gualán. This ride will take about 40 minutes. Once you arrive in Gualán, ask the locals for the next bus to San Juan La Laguna. Be aware that this bus may not run frequently, so check the schedule in advance. Once you reach San Juan La Laguna, you can either hike the remaining 15 km to the falls or hire a local taxi or tuk-tuk for a more comfortable ride. The cost for the taxi ride may vary, but expect to pay around $15-20 USD.

• Hiking

  For adventurous visitors already in San Juan La Laguna, you can hike to Big Rock Falls. The trailhead starts near the village and is well marked, but be sure to ask locals for specific directions. The hike is approximately 15 km and takes about 4-5 hours one way, depending on your pace. The terrain can be rocky and steep in places, so wear sturdy hiking boots and bring plenty of water. Enjoy the scenic views along the way, and be prepared for a rewarding experience upon reaching the falls.
