Overview
Venture into the heart of Alta Verapaz and discover the Grutas del Rey Marcos, a mesmerizing cave system that promises an unforgettable journey into the Earth's depths. Located just 6 kilometers from San Juan Chamelco and 14 kilometers from Cobán, these caves have been sculpted over centuries by a subterranean river, creating breathtaking natural rock formations.Discovered in 1998 by Óscar and Iván Fernández, the Grutas del Rey Marcos have quickly become one of the region's major spiritual and tourist attractions. The caves were known and visited since pre-Columbian times and are still visited for Mayan ceremonies. As you explore the winding paths, you'll encounter shimmering stalactites and stalagmites, illuminated to enhance the otherworldly atmosphere. At one point, you'll have to wade through the underground river to reach the more impressive cave galleries.Beyond the caves, the surrounding area offers a variety of activities. Enjoy canopy tours, boat rides, and scenic hiking trails through the lush rainforest. Relax in the natural pools at Balneario Cecilinda, fed by a spring gushing from the mountainside. The site also offers lodging, spa facilities, and a restaurant serving traditional Guatemalan cuisine. Many believe the caves possess mystical, curative, and spiritual properties, making a visit a truly transformative experience.
