Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving from the town of Panajachel, take the CA-1 highway east towards Solola. Continue on CA-1 for about 60 km until you reach the town of Chimaltenango. From Chimaltenango, take the CA-9 highway towards Guatemala City but turn off towards San Martín Jilotepeque. Follow the road signs toward Chelemhá. After approximately 30 km, you will find signs for Reserva Chelemhá. There is no entry fee, but make sure to fill up on gas and have some cash for any local purchases.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Reserva Chelemhá by public transport, first take a bus from Panajachel to Chimaltenango. Buses depart frequently and the fare is approximately 20 GTQ. Once in Chimaltenango, transfer to a bus heading towards San Martín Jilotepeque. It is advisable to ask the driver to drop you off at the nearest point to Chelemhá. From there, you may need to hire a local taxi, which can cost around 50-100 GTQ, depending on the distance.

• Taxi

  If you prefer a more direct route, you can hire a taxi from any major town in the Central Highlands (like Panajachel or Chimaltenango) directly to Reserva Chelemhá. This option is more expensive, costing between 300 to 500 GTQ, but it offers the convenience of door-to-door service. Make sure to negotiate the fare beforehand.

• Walking

  If you are staying nearby, hiking to Reserva Chelemhá is an excellent option for those who enjoy nature. The trails leading to the reserve can be accessed from the surrounding areas. Ensure you have a good map and take necessary precautions, as some trails may be steep or challenging. This option is free but requires good physical condition.
