Discover more about The Lost World

Located southwest of Tikal's Great Plaza, the Lost World (Mundo Perdido) is an expansive complex of 38 structures, dominated by a large pyramid dating back to the Preclassic period. This area served as one of Tikal's primary ceremonial centers from as early as 500 BC to AD 250, and may have functioned as a royal burial ground. The Lost World Pyramid (Structure 5C-54) is the complex's centerpiece, initially constructed around AD 1 as an astronomical observatory. The pyramid's east stairway was used to observe the sunrise during equinoxes and solstices, aligning with three temples on the East Platform. Over centuries, the pyramid was expanded, with archaeologists discovering four similar pyramids beneath its outer layer. Climbing the pyramid today offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding jungle and other Tikal temples. Architectural styles within the Lost World complex reflect influences from Teotihuacan, a powerful city in central Mexico. Structure 5C-49, a smaller temple west of the main pyramid, features the talud-tablero style characteristic of Teotihuacan architecture. Despite being one of the oldest areas in Tikal, the Lost World remained in use until the city's decline around AD 900. Exploring this complex provides insights into the early development of Mayan civilization and its interactions with other Mesoamerican cultures.
