Founded in 2002, the museum is situated in Zone 11, in the southern part of the area once encompassed by Kaminaljuyu. The museum spans approximately 1,200 square meters and includes three preserved mounds within its grounds. The museum's collection comprises around 500 artifacts excavated from Kaminaljuyu between 1994 and 1996 during the Proyecto Miraflores. The entrance hall features a map of the ancient city overlaid with the streets of modern Guatemala City. The museum includes a permanent exhibition hall, a temporary exhibition hall, and a mezzanine displaying archaeological photographs. Additionally, there is a shop, cafeteria, and spaces for workshops and conferences. The mounds in the garden are three of twenty-five surviving from Kaminaljuyu on private property. Labels are in Spanish and usually English. The museum is housed in a modern, LEED-certified building with views of Guatemala City and surrounding volcanoes. It is connected to a shopping mall with secure parking.
