Discover more about Biotopo del Quetzal

Nestled within the lush, green mountains of Guatemala, Biotopo del Quetzal offers a sanctuary for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers alike. Officially named Biotopo Mario Dary Rivera, in honor of its founder, the reserve was established in 1976 to protect the endangered habitat of the Resplendent Quetzal and other wildlife. Spanning over 2,580 acres (1,044 hectares) of cloud forest in the Baja Verapaz region, the Biotopo is a natural monument with mountainous terrain, ranging from 1,500 to 2,300 meters above sea level. The Quetzal, revered as a symbol of freedom and beauty in ancient Mayan culture, is known for its vibrant colors and long tail feathers. While spotting a Quetzal requires patience and a bit of luck, the reserve provides an excellent opportunity to observe these magnificent birds in their natural habitat, especially between January and June. Even if the elusive Quetzal remains hidden, the Biotopo's diverse ecosystem offers a captivating experience. Two well-maintained hiking trails wind through the reserve, allowing visitors to explore the cloud forest's wonders. The Sendero Los Helechos (Fern Trail) is a shorter, 1.8-kilometer loop, while the Sendero Los Musgos (Moss Trail) extends for 3.6 kilometers. Along these trails, hikers can admire a variety of plant species, including orchids, bromeliads, ferns, and ancient trees, as well as cascading waterfalls. The trails also provide shelter and rest stops. The reserve is home to diverse fauna, including various bird species, butterflies, and mammals like ocelots and howler monkeys. The Biotopo del Quetzal plays a vital role in conservation, with entrance fees supporting the reserve's maintenance and protection efforts. Rangers patrol the area to prevent illegal activities and educate the community about forest fire prevention.
