Castillo de San Felipe de Lara, Ixil Triangle Travel Guide

Nestled at the entrance of Lake Izabal, where the Río Dulce meets El Golfete lake, Castillo de San Felipe de Lara is a testament to Guatemala's colonial past and its struggles against piracy. Constructed in 1644 by the Spanish, the fortress was strategically positioned to defend the port of San Antonio de las Bodegas from English pirates who frequently raided the area. These buccaneers would sail up the Río Dulce, targeting Spanish supplies and mule trains.The castle's design reflects its military purpose. Originally, a tower existed on the site in 1604. The fort was expanded in 1651 and redesigned in 1687 in the style of French military architect Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. It featured a semi-circular bastion enclosed by outer walls terminating in square towers. At night, a large chain was stretched across the river from the fort to the opposite bank to block pirate passage. Despite these defenses, pirates captured and burned the fort in 1686. It was later rebuilt under the direction of Andrés Ortiz de Urbina.Throughout its history, Castillo de San Felipe served multiple roles, including a military center, a prison, and a customs center. The fort was also used as a prison due to the harsh climate and its fortifications. Today, the castle is a national historic monument and a popular tourist destination. Visitors can explore the well-preserved structure, wander its grounds, and enjoy panoramic views of Lake Izabal and the Río Dulce. The site also offers picnic areas and the opportunity to rent jet skis.
