Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Walking
From the Pacaya Volcano visitor center near San Francisco de Sales, the trail to Vista Oriente is well-marked but can be steep and challenging in sections. The hike typically takes 1-2 hours. Local guides are available for hire at the visitor center and are highly recommended. Hiring a guide is mandatory. Be prepared for loose volcanic ash and unstable footing. A walking stick can be helpful and can be purchased from children at the base of the trail for around Q5. Entrance fee to the Pacaya National Park is Q100 for foreigners.
Horseback
For a less strenuous ascent, consider hiring a horse from local vendors near the visitor center. The horseback ride will take you partway up the volcano, with the final section requiring a walk. Negotiate the price beforehand, typically around Q160-Q200 for a round trip. In addition to the horse rental, the entrance fee to the Pacaya National Park is Q100 for foreigners. A local guide is mandatory.
