Discover more about Santuario de San Felipe de Jesús

The Santuario de San Felipe de Jesús, located in Antigua Guatemala, stands as a testament to the area's rich religious history and architectural beauty. The village of San Felipe de Jesús was established in 1670 by people who had moved from another community after suffering disease outbreaks and a plague of bats. The parishioners brought with them the sculpture of a Christ or Crucified Lord, which they kept in a simple oratory built in 1760. In 1820, a temple with neo-colonial characteristics was built, but a larger chapel was inaugurated in 1870 due to the growing number of worshipers. However, the earthquakes in 1917 and 1918 seriously damaged the structure. The earthquake that occurred in 1976 also caused serious damage to the structure of the building, requiring a new construction. With the help and collaboration of different entities, the neighbors began a new building in 1978, concluding it in 1984, showing a Gothic-Renaissance style in its construction that differs from the rest of the religious buildings of La Antigua Guatemala. Today, visitors can appreciate the church's unique architecture, participate in religious ceremonies, and explore the surrounding cobblestone streets and colorful markets.
