Discover more about Cerro de La Cruz

Cerro de la Cruz, originally known as Cerro del Manchen, is a prominent hill overlooking Antigua Guatemala, offering arguably the best views of the city and the iconic Volcán de Agua. The hill got its current name after the construction of a large cross at its summit in 1930. Mayor Guillermo Arzú Matheu initiated the project, which included building a windy road to the top. Reaching the summit involves a relatively easy hike of about 1.5 kilometers (1 mile), typically taking 15 to 20 minutes. The trail is well-maintained with stone steps and pathways, suitable for most ages and fitness levels. Alternatively, you can drive or take a tuk-tuk to the top. At the top, you'll find benches and steps fanning out from the cross, offering plenty of space to sit and appreciate the vista. The site has undergone recent renovations, enhancing the visitor experience. In addition to the cross, there's a sculpture of Santiago Apostol (Saint James) donated by the Spanish government in 1971. Cerro de la Cruz is more than just a viewpoint; it's a historical landmark. The cross was initially made of wood before being replaced with a cement structure. Visiting the hill is a tradition, especially on the Thursday of the Ascension, commemorating Jesus's ascent into heaven. The surrounding area features a forest and resting areas where visitors can relax and enjoy the scenery. The site has been captured by countless photographers, drawn to the colors of the colonial city.
