Discover more about La Blanca, Peten

La Blanca, nestled in the northern Petén Department of Guatemala, is an archaeological site offering a fascinating look into the Maya civilization. The site's occupation dates back to the Middle Preclassic period (900–600 BC), with major activity occurring during the Late Classic period (AD 600–900). While not as widely known as Tikal or Yaxha, La Blanca provides a unique and intimate experience for visitors interested in Mayan history and architecture. The site is characterized by its impressive acropolis, a well-built palace complex that dominates the area. La Blanca appears to have been an administrative center and its location suggests it may have been a subsidiary of larger Maya cities. The structures seen today primarily date from the Late Classic period, with some modifications from the Terminal Classic. The city was abandoned around the same time as the Maya collapse. Located near the Mopan River, La Blanca occupies a small pocket of forest surrounded by agricultural land. The site is divided into two main groups: the Grand Plaza with the Acropolis, and the South Group.
