    Discover more about Fort Hommet

Fort Hommet, perched on the Vazon Bay headland in Castel, Guernsey, is a captivating site where centuries of military history converge. The name 'houmet' is derived from the Guernesiais word for peninsula. The site's strategic importance has been recognized since at least 1680, with fortifications evolving through various eras. The earliest recorded fortification dates back to 1680, but it was during the Napoleonic Wars that the site was significantly strengthened. A Martello tower, completed in 1804, stands as a testament to this period. The Victorian era saw further expansion, with additional batteries and barracks enhancing the fort's defenses. During the German occupation of the Channel Islands in World War II, Fort Hommet was transformed into a key part of the Atlantic Wall. The Germans added four casemates to house guns, forming Stützpunkt Rotenstein (Strongpoint Rotenstein). These additions, quickly constructed using concrete, are still visible today. One of the casemates has been restored and is open to the public. Today, visitors can explore the various levels of the fort, taking in the stunning views across Vazon Bay. The site also features the Shrine of the Sacred Heart, a former German searchlight bunker transformed into a chapel adorned with seashells. Fort Hommet is a popular spot for walking, bird watching, and enjoying the coastal scenery.
