Discover more about Saumarez Park

Saumarez Park, centrally located in the parish of Castel, stands as Guernsey's largest public park and a testament to the island's rich horticultural heritage. The park's story began in 1869 when Baron James Saumarez, a seasoned diplomat, acquired the estate and transformed it with exotic gardens inspired by his travels. These gardens included a bamboo walk, a Japanese garden, a camellia lawn, a rose garden, and a Victorian walled garden. Today, visitors can still wander through these themed gardens, experiencing the beauty and tranquility that Saumarez envisioned. The park offers a diverse range of attractions and activities. Families can enjoy the large adventure playground and outdoor gym, while history buffs can explore the National Trust of Guernsey's Folk & Costume Museum, housed within meticulously restored traditional farm buildings. The Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden, a restoration project by the Guernsey Botanical Trust, showcases the fruits, vegetables, and flowers of the Victorian era. A charming Japanese fishing hut sits beside a serene duck pond, adding to the park's tranquil atmosphere. Saumarez Park is more than just a collection of attractions; it's a vibrant social venue that hosts various events throughout the year. Le Viaër Marchi, a fundraising event for the National Trust of Guernsey, the Lions Club of Guernsey's Donkey Derby, and the North Show and Battle of Flowers are just a few of the annual highlights. With its blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and recreational opportunities, Saumarez Park offers something for everyone. The park is open year-round from dawn until dusk, with free entry except during special events.
