Getting There

  • Car

    If you are driving from Port-au-Prince, head northwest on Route Nationale #1 (RN1). Continue for approximately 20 km until you reach the turn-off for Route de la Citadelle (also known as Route de Milot). Follow this road and continue up the mountain towards the Laferriere Citadel. The last section of the drive may be steep and winding, so drive carefully. Parking is available at designated areas near the entrance.

  • Public Transportation

    To reach Laferriere Citadel via public transportation, take a 'tap-tap' (shared taxi) from Port-au-Prince to the town of Milot. You can find tap-taps near the central market or along main streets. The fare is usually around 100 HTG (Haitian Gourdes). Once in Milot, hire a local motorcycle taxi (moto) or a guide to take you up to the Citadel. The moto fare should be around 300 HTG. Be sure to negotiate the price before starting your journey.

  • Hiking

    For the adventurous, after reaching Milot, you can choose to hike to Laferriere Citadel. The trail starts near the entrance of the Citadel area and is marked. The hike is steep and can take about 1-2 hours, depending on your fitness level. Make sure to wear appropriate footwear and bring water. Guides are available locally for a small fee, which is recommended to enhance your experience.
