Turul Monument: Guardian of Tatabánya

The Turul Monument, a majestic bronze sculpture, stands as a powerful symbol of Hungarian heritage in Tatabánya. Erected in 1907, the monument features the Turul, a falcon-like bird from Hungarian mythology, believed to have guided the Magyars to their homeland. The monument commemorates this legendary guidance and serves as a reminder of Hungarian national pride. The Turul statue, with a wingspan of nearly 15 meters, is considered one of the largest bird statues in Europe. It stands in a combative posture, holding the sword of Grand Duke Árpád and wearing a stylized Hungarian crown. Perched on Kő-hegy (Stone Mountain), the statue offers stunning panoramic views of Tatabánya and the surrounding landscape, including Oroszlány, Tata and even Pannonhalma and Komárom on a clear day. The site has become an increasingly popular tourist destination, enhanced by developments in the late 2010s. A short geological nature trail connects the statue to the nearby Szelim Cave, showcasing the natural features of the Vértes and Gerecse mountains. Another trail, the Millennium Trail, leads to the Gerecse Visitor Center Gate and the Ranzinger Vince Lookout Tower. The statue has undergone restorations, including one in 1992, and has become a central element in Tatabánya's coat of arms.
