If you are driving from Askja Caldera, start by heading southwest on Road 1 (the Ring Road). After approximately 50 kilometers, take the exit toward Road 864, which leads to Skútustaðir. Continue on Road 864 for about 20 kilometers, following the signs toward Dimmuborgir. The lava field will be clearly marked, and you can park in the designated parking area near the entrance.

Using public transportation from Askja Caldera, you will need to first take a bus to Akureyri, which is the nearest town with more transportation options. From Akureyri, you can catch a bus that goes to Skútustaðir. Once you arrive in Skútustaðir, you will need to walk approximately 5 kilometers to reach the Dimmuborgir lava field. Be sure to check the bus schedules ahead of time as they may vary.
