Car
If you are driving from Hengifoss waterfall, start by heading south on Route 1 (the Ring Road). Continue for approximately 17 kilometers until you reach the turn for Road 931. Turn left onto Road 931 and follow the signs towards Axlafoss waterfall. After about 10 kilometers, look for a small parking area on your right side. Park your vehicle here and follow the marked hiking trail leading directly to Axlafoss waterfall, which is about a 1-kilometer walk from the parking area.
Public Transportation
If you are using public transportation, you will need to take a bus from the closest town to Hengifoss, which is Egilsstaðir. From Egilsstaðir, catch a bus that goes towards Seyðisfjörður. Ask the driver to let you off at the nearest stop to the turn for Road 931. From there, you will need to walk approximately 10 kilometers to the parking area for Axlafoss waterfall. Make sure to check the local bus schedules as they can vary, and it's recommended to plan your trip in advance.
Hiking
For the adventurous, if you're already at Hengifoss waterfall, you can hike towards Axlafoss waterfall. Begin at the base of Hengifoss and follow the trail that leads eastward. The hike will take you roughly an hour depending on your pace, and you will be treated to stunning views along the way. Ensure you have appropriate hiking gear and sufficient water, as the trail can be rocky and uneven.
