Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Car
If you're traveling by car, start by heading to Route F26, which is the main access road to Aldeyjarfoss. From any point in the Highlands, navigate to F26. Once on F26, drive north for approximately 25 kilometers. As you approach Aldeyjarfoss, you will see signs directing you to the waterfall. There is a parking area near the waterfall, where you can leave your vehicle. Please note that F26 is a mountain road, so ensure your vehicle is suitable for rough terrain, and check road conditions before your trip.
Public Transportation
If you prefer public transport, you can take a bus from Akureyri to the Highlands. Look for the bus service that operates towards the Highlands, such as Strætó. Note that the bus may not take you directly to Aldeyjarfoss, so you will need to get off at the nearest stop on F26. From there, it's advisable to arrange a taxi or a local shuttle service to cover the remaining distance. Be sure to check the bus schedules in advance, as they may vary.
Hiking
For adventurous travelers, consider hiking from the nearest bus stop or parking area. There are marked trails leading to Aldeyjarfoss that offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Ensure you have proper hiking gear, as the terrain can be rugged. Carry enough water and snacks for the hike, and plan for varying weather conditions. This option is free apart from the initial cost of public transportation.
