Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start from the nearest town, Egilsstaðir, which is about 130 km away. Head west on Route 1 (the Ring Road) until you reach Route 931, where you will turn left. Continue on Route 931, which will take you through stunning landscapes. Follow Route 931 until it intersects with Route 1 again, and then take Route 1 north. Look for signs indicating the highland roads, particularly Route F910 or F26, which will lead you closer to Dyngjufjoll. Please note that F-roads are usually only accessible with 4WD vehicles, and may require a fee for road maintenance. Continue on the F-road until you see signs for Dyngjufjoll. Be cautious of the terrain and drive slowly to ensure safety.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Dyngjufjoll using public transportation, you'll need to take a bus from Reykjavik to Egilsstaðir, which is the closest major hub. The bus ride takes about 8 hours and tickets cost approximately ISK 10,000. Upon arrival in Egilsstaðir, you can catch a local bus to the highlands, but be aware that services may be limited. Ensure to check the bus schedule ahead of time. Once you reach the highland bus stop, you will likely need to arrange for a local guide or taxi to take you to Dyngjufjoll, as public transport does not directly access the mountain. Budget for additional costs here, as local transport may vary.

• Hiking

  If you are already in the Highlands and prefer hiking, you can start from the nearest hiking trail that leads to Dyngjufjoll. Make sure to have a map or GPS device, as trails can be unmarked. Bring adequate hiking gear, food, and water for the journey. The hike can take several hours depending on your starting point, so plan accordingly. Start early in the day to allow plenty of time to return before dark.
