If you are driving, start from the nearest main road, Route 518, which leads towards Langjökull Glacier. After traveling approximately 30 km along Route 518, look for a sign indicating 'Stóra-Jarlhetta'. Turn onto the gravel road that leads towards the hiking area. This road can be rough, so ensure your vehicle is suitable for off-road travel. Continue for about 5 km until you reach the designated parking area near Stóra-Jarlhetta.
Public Transportation
If you are relying on public transportation, you can take a bus from Reykjavik to Húsafell, which is the closest town to Langjökull Glacier. From Húsafell, you will need to arrange for a local taxi or shuttle service to take you to the Stóra-Jarlhetta area. Make sure to book this in advance, as public transport options are limited in this remote area. Expect the taxi or shuttle ride to take approximately 30-40 minutes.
Hiking
Once you arrive at the parking area, you will need to hike to Stóra-Jarlhetta. The trail is well-marked and takes you through stunning landscapes. The hike is approximately 3 km one way and should take around 1-1.5 hours. Make sure to wear appropriate hiking gear and carry enough water and snacks for the journey.
