Car
If you're traveling by car, start from the town of Akureyri, which is about 90 km southwest of Leirhnjúkur. Take Route 1 (the Ring Road) heading east towards Egilsstaðir. After approximately 40 km, take the exit for Route 87 towards Reykjahlíð. Continue on Route 87 for about 22 km until you reach the town of Reykjahlíð. From Reykjahlíð, take Route 1 heading north for about 5 km, then turn right onto the gravel road (F road 848) leading directly to Leirhnjúkur. Follow this road for about 10 km until you reach the parking area near the geothermal area. Note that a 4WD vehicle is recommended for this road due to its rough condition. There are no tolls on this route.

Public Transportation
For public transportation, you can take a bus from Akureyri to Reykjahlíð. Check the schedules for Strætó, the public bus service in Iceland. The bus ride takes approximately 1.5 hours. Once in Reykjahlíð, you will need to arrange for a taxi or a local shuttle service to take you to Leirhnjúkur, as there is no direct public transport to the site. The taxi fare may cost around 5,000 ISK one way. Make sure to confirm the availability of taxis in advance, as they may not always be readily available.
