Car
If you're traveling by car, start from the town of Grindavík. Drive on Suðurstrandarvegur (Route 43) towards the volcano. The drive takes about 15 minutes. Follow the signs for Fagradalsfjall. You will see parking areas near the hiking trail head. Parking may incur a fee, typically around 1,000 ISK (Icelandic Króna) for the day.
Public Transportation
If using public transportation, take the bus from Reykjavik to Grindavík. The bus service is provided by Strætó and the trip takes approximately 45 minutes. Once in Grindavík, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to reach the Fagradalsfjall Volcano trailhead, as public transport does not directly serve the area. Taxi costs may vary, typically around 3,000-5,000 ISK.
Hiking
Once you've parked or arrived by taxi, you will need to hike to the volcano. The main trail is well-marked and offers stunning views. The hike to the volcano can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on your pace. Ensure to wear sturdy footwear and bring water, as the terrain can be rocky.
