Car
If you are starting from Reykjavík, take Route 1 (the Ring Road) heading north. Continue on Route 1 for about 130 km until you reach the town of Borgarnes. At Borgarnes, take Route 54 heading towards Snæfellsnes Peninsula. After approximately 20 km, you will see the signs for Borgarvirki. Turn off Route 54 and follow the road signs leading you to Borgarvirki. The last stretch involves a gravel road that leads directly to the site, so ensure your vehicle is suitable for this terrain.
Public Transportation
To reach Borgarvirki using public transport, take a bus from Reykjavík to Borgarnes. The bus departs from the main bus terminal in Reykjavík, and the journey takes about 2 hours. Once in Borgarnes, you may need to hire a taxi or use a local shuttle service to reach Borgarvirki, as public transport options may be limited. It's advisable to check the local bus schedules in advance, as they can vary depending on the day of the week.
Taxi or Rideshare
If you prefer a more direct route without a rental car, consider using a taxi or rideshare service from Borgarnes to Borgarvirki. This option allows for flexibility in your schedule and ensures you can enjoy the scenery along the way. Be aware that taxi fares can be relatively high in Iceland, so confirm the estimated cost with the driver before departing.
Use Borgarvirki as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
