History of Rexburg

Settlement in the Snake River Plain

Rexburg emerged in the 1880s as a settlement of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who were encouraged to establish farming communities in eastern Idaho. Thomas E. Ricks, a prominent church leader and settler, helped organise the community, which took the name Rexburg from his given name. Irrigation and agriculture were central to early survival, turning parts of the high, semi-arid Snake River Plain into productive farmland. The town's grid, religious institutions and cooperative social life reflected the planned settlement patterns common to many Latter-day Saint communities in the American West.

Incorporation and Agricultural Growth

Rexburg was incorporated in 1883 and developed as a local centre for farms and nearby settlements. Grain, potatoes, sugar beet production and livestock became important to the regional economy, while roads and later rail connections strengthened links with Idaho Falls and other communities. Commercial buildings, civic institutions and religious structures followed the expansion of the population. The city's position between the Snake River and the Teton country also gave it a practical role in supplying rural districts. Although agriculture remained fundamental, education and church administration increasingly shaped Rexburg's public identity.

The Rise of Ricks Academy

Education became one of Rexburg's defining institutions when Ricks Academy opened in 1888 under the sponsorship of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The school developed through several forms and names, eventually becoming Ricks College. Its presence brought students, teachers and cultural programmes to a town otherwise dominated by agriculture. The institution also helped connect Rexburg to a wider network of Latter-day Saint education in the American West. In 2001, Ricks College became Brigham Young University-Idaho, a change that expanded its mission and reinforced the city's role as a university community.

The Teton Dam Disaster

Rexburg's modern history was profoundly altered by the failure of Teton Dam on 5 June 1976. The dam, situated upstream on the Teton River, released a destructive flood through communities in the valley, including Rexburg. Homes, businesses, farmland and public infrastructure were damaged or destroyed, and the disaster caused deaths across the affected area. The city undertook extensive rebuilding, while memories of the event remained part of local civic life. The Teton Flood Museum preserves photographs, objects and personal accounts that explain both the scale of the catastrophe and the community's recovery.
