History of Bolingbrook

Indigenous Prairie and River Country

The land around present-day Bolingbrook formed part of the prairie and river environment inhabited and used by Indigenous peoples, including Potawatomi communities, before large-scale American settlement. The nearby Des Plaines and DuPage river systems provided water, travel routes and access to woodland and grassland resources. Treaties and forced removals during the nineteenth century opened the region to expanding United States settlement, although Indigenous history remains an essential part of the area's deeper past.
