    From downtown Galena, including Main Street, the U.S. Grant Home is a pleasant 15-minute walk. Head south on Commerce Street, crossing the Galena River. Continue up the hill to Grant Park, and then follow Bouthillier Street to the U.S. Grant Home. There are no costs associated with walking.

    Jo Daviess County Transit provides public transportation within Galena. The general fare within the city is $0.50 each way, but a 24-hour advance notice is required. Call 815-777-8088 to arrange a ride. The transit will drop you off near the U.S. Grant Home on Bouthillier Street.

    From Highway 20, follow the signs to downtown Galena. Once in downtown, follow the signs to the U.S. Grant Home. The home is located at 500 Bouthillier Street. There are three parking lots available on-site. Parking is free. The upper lot is approximately 200 feet from the home. Sidewalks are brick and wooden boardwalks.

Inside, visitors can explore rooms furnished to represent a mid-1860s appearance, with many original furnishings belonging to the Grant family. The first floor includes an entry hall, parlor, dining room, library, kitchen, and staff room, while the second floor contains five bedrooms. The site also includes a building with exhibits on Grant's life and the history of the home. The U.S. Grant Home was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. The site is part of the Galena Historic District, which features over 1,000 contributing properties. Visitors can take interpreter-led tours of the Grant Home, with guides in historic costumes from April through October. The tour emphasizes Grant's role as a victorious war leader, presidential candidate, and the 18th President. The site also hosts special events, including lamplight tours and holiday decorations.
