The Field Building: An Art Deco Masterpiece

Located at 135 S La Salle Street in the heart of Chicago's Loop, the Field Building stands as a remarkable example of Art Deco architecture. Completed in 1934 by Graham, Anderson, Probst & White, this 45-story skyscraper was the last major office building constructed in Chicago before the economic downturn of the Great Depression and the onset of World War II brought large-scale building projects to a standstill.The building's design showcases the key characteristics of the Art Deco movement, featuring a vertical profile, stepped silhouette, and a facade adorned with ornate detailing. The exterior is clad in limestone, with polished black granite at the base and polished aluminum framing the windows. The lobby boasts a multi-level arcade connecting LaSalle and Clark Streets, allowing pedestrians to pass through the building and access retail spaces.Rising 535 feet (163.1 meters), the Field Building was innovative for its time, incorporating high-speed elevators, air conditioning, and concealed radiation. The building occupies a significant place in Chicago's architectural history, as it was built on the site of the Home Insurance Building, considered the world's first skyscraper. Designated a Chicago Landmark on February 9, 1994, the Field Building continues to be a prominent feature of the city's skyline.
