Discover more about Grosse Point Lighthouse

Grosse Point Lighthouse, a beacon of maritime history, stands proudly on the shores of Lake Michigan in Evanston, Illinois. Constructed in 1873, the lighthouse was essential for guiding ships safely into the bustling Chicago harbor, especially during the industrial revolution when smoke often obscured other navigational aids. The need for a lighthouse became tragically clear after several shipwrecks, including the Lady Elgin disaster in 1860, which claimed nearly 300 lives. The lighthouse itself is an impressive structure, boasting an Italianate design and a 113-foot tower. Originally built with cream city brick, a concrete layer was added in 1914 to protect against deterioration. Inside, a second-order Fresnel lens, one of the largest on the Great Lakes, cast a light visible for up to 20 miles. Visitors can climb the 141 steps to the top of the tower for panoramic views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline. The Grosse Point Lighthouse complex includes the keeper's quarters, a charming Italianate duplex, and surrounding grounds. The site also features a museum with exhibits on the lighthouse's history, the lives of its keepers, and the story of the Lady Elgin shipwreck. The Garden Club of Evanston maintains beautiful wildflower and butterfly gardens on the property, adding to the scenic beauty.Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1999, Grosse Point Lighthouse is more than just a historic structure; it's a testament to maritime history and a reminder of the importance of safe navigation on the Great Lakes.
