    Getting There

    Driving

    From Illinois Route 127, follow the signs to Bald Knob Cross. The Godwin-East Trailhead is approximately 6 miles from Route 127, near the Bald Knob Cross. Alternatively, to reach the Bald Knob Trailhead, take Route 127 to Alto Pass, then turn onto Brown Section Road. After 1.6 miles, turn onto Rhine Road. A sign and a pull-off area mark the parking spot.

    Walking

    From the Bald Knob Cross, the Godwin-East Trailhead is a short walk away. Follow the marked path from the cross to the trailhead. From the village of Alto Pass, you can access the Quetil Trail, a former railroad track that provides a scenic walking route. This trail connects to Cliff View Park, offering views of the Bald Knob Cross and surrounding area.

    Wear sturdy hiking boots and be prepared for steep, rocky terrain. The trails can be challenging, especially during wet conditions.

Once farmland and settlements of early pioneers, the area has transformed into a second-growth forest, offering visitors a glimpse into nature's resilience. Evidence of past human activity, such as old home sites, orchards, and cemeteries, can still be found throughout the wilderness.The terrain is characterized by steep, rocky slopes, often exceeding 80%, creating a challenging but rewarding experience for hikers and horseback riders. The main trail, the River to River Trail, stretches from Godwin-East Trailhead to Hutchins Creek, offering approximately 5 to 6 miles of rugged and hilly conditions. During the leaf-off season, hikers along the Bald Knob Trail are treated to excellent views of the Clear Creek Valley.Adjacent to the wilderness is the prominent Bald Knob Cross, a 111-foot tall structure that serves as a landmark and a site for annual Easter sunrise services. The nearby community of Alto Pass offers various points of interest, including wineries and the Root Beer Saloon, providing convenient access to supplies for wilderness users. Cliff View Park in Alto Pass offers scenic overlooks, including views of the Bald Knob Cross.Visitors can engage in various activities within the wilderness, including hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, camping (dispersed, no reservations or fees required), nature viewing, and hunting. The area is managed by the US Forest Service, emphasizing the importance of Leave No Trace principles to preserve its natural state.
