Getting There

  • Driving

    Bell Smith Springs is located off Ozark Road near Eddyville, Illinois. From Harrisburg, take Highway 145 south for 11 miles to Burden Falls Road, turn right and go 5 miles to Ozark Road, then turn south (left). Continue to Bell Smith Springs Road and turn southwest (right), proceeding 2 miles to the destination. From Vienna, take Highway 45 north 12 miles to Ozark Road, turn east (right) and go 10 miles to Bell Smith Springs Road, then turn southwest (right) and proceed 2 miles. Be aware that Burden Falls Road, Ozark Road, and Bell Smith Springs Road are gravel and can be rough. Parking is available at the main Bell Smith Springs Trailhead and the Hunting Branch Trailhead. If the main parking areas are full, additional parking can be found near the Redbud Campground. Parking is free. Do not park on the side of the road, as this may result in towing.

    Once you've parked at the main trailhead, the main attractions are easily accessible by foot. From the parking area, follow the trail down the stone staircase built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. At the bottom of the stairs, you can turn right to reach the Devil's Backbone or turn left to wade to the Natural Arch. The trails are well-marked, but be prepared for some creek crossings and potentially slippery rocks. Remember to stay on the designated trails and follow Leave No Trace principles.
