Discover more about Historic Fort D

Step back in time at Historic Fort D, a well-preserved Civil War fortification in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Constructed in the summer of 1861, Fort D was one of four forts built to protect the city from Confederate attacks. Today, it stands as the only one remaining, offering visitors a tangible connection to a pivotal period in American history. The fort was built under the direction of Lieutenant John Wesley Powell, who would later become famous for his exploration of the Grand Canyon. Powell recruited local men to form a company to man the guns. Union troops, local residents, and even escaped slaves contributed to the fort's construction. The earthwork walls, made of packed dirt, proved to be a more effective defense than wood or stone. The fort was armed with cannons, capable of firing heavy projectiles over a mile. While Fort D never saw direct combat, it served as a crucial deterrent.Visitors can explore the original earthen walls, read informational signs detailing the fort's history, and imagine life as a Civil War soldier. A limestone building, constructed in 1937 as a WPA project, adds another layer to the site's historical significance. Living history events take place throughout the year, bringing the past to life with reenactments and demonstrations. Fort D is open to the public year-round, offering a unique opportunity to learn about the Civil War in a serene and historically significant setting.
