    Getting There

    Driving

    To reach Jackson Falls, navigate to Ozark, Illinois. From Harrisburg, take Highway 145 south to Burden Falls Road, turn west, and continue to Glen Street Falls Road. Turn left and drive to the Jackson Falls Trailhead. From Vienna, take Highway 45 north to Ozark Road, turn east, and then turn right onto Glen Street Falls Road. The trailhead is 2 miles down Glen Street Falls Road. Note that Glen Street Falls Road is a narrow gravel road suitable for most vehicles, but high clearance is recommended. Parking is available at the trailhead. Parking is free.

    Walking

    From the parking area at the Jackson Falls Trailhead, follow the main trail (Trail 048) to the southwest. This leads to the top of the main waterfall. To reach the base of the falls, cross the creek carefully and follow the trail to the left. Continue until you reach a wooden bridge, and then look for a rocky descent to your right, known as the 'Dog Walk'. Use caution when descending. The round trip from the trailhead to the base of the waterfall and back is approximately 3-4 miles. There are no fees for accessing the trails.

    Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring plenty of water, especially if you plan to hike to the bottom of the falls or go rock climbing.

    Be prepared for a rugged, natural experience; pack out all trash and bring your own drinking water.
    Exercise caution near the exposed cliffs and waterfalls, as there have been injuries and fatalities in the past.

    Jackson Falls, often called the "Best Kept Secret in Illinois," is a premier recreation area within the Shawnee National Forest. The falls themselves are seasonal, dependent on rainfall, but the towering sandstone cliffs and unique geological formations offer year-round appeal.The area's history is relatively untouched until the 1930s when it was incorporated into the Shawnee National Forest. Before that, a commercial rail line ran through the canyon. In the 1980s, Jackson Falls became a climbing destination when Eric Ulner began bolting routes. Today, Jackson Falls boasts over 400 designated climbing routes, attracting climbers of all skill levels.Hiking is also a popular activity, with trails ranging from easy strolls to more challenging routes. The Top of Falls Trail is a short, scenic path to the top of the falls, while the Bottom of Falls Trail offers a more adventurous route to the base. Keep an eye out for the 'Dog Walk', a narrow passage and natural staircase created by a 30-foot pile of boulders that connects the top and bottom of the canyon.Camping is permitted throughout the Jackson Falls area, offering a unique dispersed camping experience. Numerous primitive campsites are available, particularly near the North Access Trailhead. However, there are no trash services or running water, so visitors must be self-sufficient and pack out everything they pack in.Jackson Falls is also near other attractions within the Shawnee National Forest, including Bell Smith Springs, Garden of the Gods, and Burden Falls. This makes it easy to incorporate a visit to Jackson Falls into a larger exploration of the region.
