Driving
From Carbondale, IL, take Highway 13 South for approximately 7 miles to Grassy Road. Turn left onto Grassy Road and continue for 2.5 miles, then turn right onto Rocky Comfort Road. Drive south for 4.5 miles to Panther Den Road, turn left, and go 1.5 miles to Panther Den Lane. Turn left again and drive north to the trailhead. Parking is free at the trailhead. Note that Panther Den Lane is a narrow, gravel road.
Public Transportation & Walking
From Carbondale, take a Greyhound bus to Makanda. From there, it is approximately 5 miles to the Panther Den Wilderness trailhead. Arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to the trailhead. Be prepared for a walk of about 1-2 miles from the drop-off point to reach the main hiking trails within the wilderness. Taxi/Rideshare estimate from Makanda to Trailhead: $15-$25.
