Panther Den Wilderness: A Hiker's Haven

Panther Den Wilderness, a 1,195-acre designated wilderness area within the Shawnee National Forest, offers a diverse landscape sculpted over centuries. Once a waterway carved through the valley, the area now features stunning 70-foot-high cliffs, massive rock formations, and narrow crevices, creating a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The area's history is evident in its second-growth forest, a result of land clearing for agriculture in the 1930s. Today, the wilderness boasts a network of trails, including sections of the River to River Trail, catering to both casual walkers and experienced backpackers. The trails wind through rugged terrain, over rolling hills, and past unique geological features, including the 'den-like' rock shelters that give the area its name. Visitors can explore the wilderness on foot or horseback, immersing themselves in the peaceful ambiance and observing the local wildlife.
