Griggsville Landing was a steamboat stop established in the 1830s, featuring a warehouse, boat yard, hotel, and grist mill. The lime kiln, likely built in the mid-1850s, produced lime for mortar and plaster used in construction. The kiln represents a small commercial operation that predates the industrial intensification of the lime industry after the Civil War. Very few old lime kilns are preserved in Illinois today. The Griggsville Landing Lime Kiln is one of the best-preserved periodic lime kilns in Illinois. This bottle-shaped kiln has openings at the base and top, with walls about three feet thick.
