Discover more about Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site

Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site, located near Lerna, Illinois, offers a captivating glimpse into the lives of Abraham Lincoln's family and 19th-century rural life. This 86-acre park centers around a reconstruction of the two-room log cabin where Thomas Lincoln and Sarah Bush Lincoln, Abraham's father and stepmother, lived from 1840. Although Abraham Lincoln never resided here, he frequently visited and provided financial support to his parents. The site features two "living history farms" that depict agricultural practices in 1840s Illinois: the Thomas Lincoln Farm and the Stephen Sargent Farm. Costumed interpreters engage in activities such as cultivating fields, caring for animals, and performing domestic chores, offering visitors an immersive experience of the era. The Sargent Farm showcases the practices of a more prosperous farmer influenced by agricultural literature, contrasting with the traditional methods of the Lincoln Farm. Visitors can also explore the Moore Home, where President-elect Abraham Lincoln made his last visit with his stepmother and family before departing for Washington, D.C., in 1861. The site includes the gravesites of Thomas and Sarah Lincoln at the Thomas Lincoln Cemetery. The visitor center features museum exhibits, the Sargent Art Gallery, and an auditorium with an orientation video. The original Thomas Lincoln cabin was displayed at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 but was later lost. The current replica was built in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, ensuring the preservation of this important piece of Lincoln family history. The site hosts special events throughout the year, including the Harvest Frolic and living history weekends, providing an engaging and educational experience for all ages.
