  • Driving

    Millstone Bluff is accessible by car. From Harrisburg, take Highway 145 south for 22.5 miles to Highway 147. Turn right onto Highway 147 and go 1.5 miles to the Millstone Bluff entrance road. Turn right onto the entrance road and proceed to the trailhead parking lot. From Vienna, take Highway 146 east to Highway 147, go northeast on Hwy 147 for 11 miles to the Millstone Bluff entrance road. Turn left onto the entrance road and proceed to the trailhead parking lot. The road to the trailhead is gravel and contains some potholes, so drive slowly. Parking is free.

Millstone Bluff Archaeological Area offers a captivating journey into the past, showcasing the remains of an ancient Native American village nestled within the Shawnee National Forest. The site, situated atop a prominent bluff, was once home to both Woodland and Mississippian Indians. Archaeological studies suggest that the bluff's flat top and surrounding high bluffs provided a easily defensible location, contributing to its selection as a village site.The interpretive trail, nearly a mile long, guides visitors through the site, revealing remnants of houses, a stone box cemetery, and petroglyphs etched into the rock. These petroglyphs offer insights into the beliefs and practices of the Mississippian people who inhabited the area between 1350 and 1550 AD. The stone box cemetery highlights the importance of honoring the deceased in Mississippian culture.Archaeologists have uncovered portions of several houses on the bluff top, revealing that the Mississippian people lived in semi-subterranean homes. These homes were constructed with timber posts and woven branches, packed with clay to provide insulation. The site also features a stone fort, built by the Late Woodland peoples between 600 and 900 AD.
