Walking
From the Starved Rock State Park Visitor Center, follow the brown directional signs along the sidewalk heading east. The trail to French Canyon is well-marked and easily accessible. The walk to the canyon entrance is approximately 0.4 miles. Be prepared for a short scramble over rocks and through shallow water to enter the canyon. Parking is free at the main visitor center lot.
Driving
To reach French Canyon by car, navigate to Starved Rock State Park's main parking lot near the Visitor Center. From Interstate 80, take exit 81 for IL-178 South and follow the signs to the park. Parking is free, but arrive early as the lots fill quickly, especially on weekends. As of 2021, illegally parked cars may be towed and face fines up to $164. From the parking lot, follow the walking directions to the canyon.
