    Public Transport

    The Cahokia Courthouse is accessible via public transportation. Several MetroBus routes serve the Cahokia Heights area, including routes #2, #3, and #8. From the St. Louis area, take the MetroLink to the 5th & MO Transit Center, then transfer to one of the connecting bus routes to Cahokia Heights. Check the current schedules for the most up-to-date route information. A single-ride fare on MetroBus is $2.

    Walking

    If you are already in the Cahokia Heights area, the Cahokia Courthouse is easily accessible on foot. From the intersection of Illinois Route 3 and Camp Jackson Road, head east on Camp Jackson Road, then turn north onto Elm Street. The courthouse will be on your right. The walk is approximately 10 minutes. Note that sidewalks are cobblestone.

    Car

    If driving, from the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site visitor center, go south on IL-3 S for 1.2 miles. Take the exit for IL-157 N toward East St. Louis and continue for approximately 0.5 miles, then turn right onto Elm St. The Cahokia Courthouse will be on your left at 107 Elm St. There is an asphalt parking lot with designated accessible parking spaces. Parking is free.

    The Cahokia Courthouse, located in Cahokia Heights, Illinois, offers a unique glimpse into the state's formative years. Constructed around 1740 as a French residence, the building transitioned to a courthouse in 1793, becoming the seat of political and legal activity for the United States Northwest Territory. Its significance extends beyond local governance, as it served as a vital hub for the Lewis and Clark Expedition from 1803 to 1804.The courthouse is an example of French Colonial vertical log poteaux-sur-solle construction. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits depicting court cases from the early 1800s and learn about the building's fascinating journey, including its relocation to St. Louis for the 1904 World's Fair and later to Chicago before being returned to its original site in 1939. The interior features period furnishings, limestone fireplaces, and French-style doors.During the winter of 1803-1804, Lewis and Clark utilized the courthouse to gather supplies, meet with territorial leaders, collect information, and correspond with President Jefferson. They compiled geographic data and prepared gifts for the tribes they anticipated meeting. The site is now a High Potential Historic Site on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.Today, the Cahokia Courthouse functions as a museum, offering guided tours and self-led exploration. Exhibits showcase the courthouse's history, French colonial life, and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Special events, such as the Fete du Bon Vieux Temps and the Old Time Music Fete, provide additional opportunities to experience the site's rich heritage.
