Discover more about Hofmann Tower State Historic Site

Hofmann Tower State Historic Site offers a tranquil escape into local history. Constructed in 1908 by George Hofmann Jr., a local brewer, the tower was once the heart of a bustling recreational area along the Des Plaines River. Hofmann envisioned a space where visitors could enjoy boat rides and picnics, with the tower serving as its majestic centerpiece. The tower is rumored to be the first building in Lyons to be lit by electricity. The tower's design, an eight-story steel-reinforced concrete structure with four corner turrets, is said to have been inspired by bridge towers Hofmann saw during his travels in Germany. While the exact reason for its construction remains a mystery, theories range from a tribute to Hofmann's late wife to a simple desire to create a tourist attraction.Over time, the park's popularity waned due to pollution in the Des Plaines River and the advent of Prohibition. The tower eventually fell into disrepair but was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Today, the tower itself is closed, but visitors can still explore the well-maintained grounds and enjoy the picturesque river walk. The area provides a serene atmosphere for leisurely strolls, picnics, and photography.
