    Fort de Chartres is located on Illinois Route 155, about 4 miles west of Prairie du Rocher. From St. Louis, take I-255 south to Illinois Route 3, then follow signs to Prairie du Rocher and Fort de Chartres. Parking is available in two lots near the entrance. There are no fees for parking.

Fort de Chartres State Historic Site, located in Prairie du Rocher, Illinois, offers a captivating glimpse into the French colonial era. The site marks the location of the last of three forts built by the French in the 18th century. This served as the French seat of government and the main military installation in the Illinois Country.Today, visitors can explore the partially reconstructed stone fort, including portions of the walls and several buildings. The powder magazine, restored in 1917, is believed to be the oldest standing building in Illinois. The site also features a museum with exhibits depicting French life at Fort de Chartres.Fort de Chartres hosts several annual events that bring the past to life, including the Rendezvous in early June and the French and Indian War Assemblage in October. These events feature reenactments, demonstrations, and vendors selling period goods. Visitors can also explore the grounds, which include a vegetable garden and picnic area. The site is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
