Step back in time at the Old State Capitol State Historic Site in Springfield, Illinois, a reconstruction of the state's fifth capitol building. This Greek Revival masterpiece served as the heart of Illinois government from 1840 to 1876, witnessing pivotal moments in the state and nation's history. Designed by architect John Francis Rague, the building housed the Illinois General Assembly, the Governor's office, the Illinois Supreme Court, and was constructed from yellow limestone. Abraham Lincoln served his final term as a state lawmaker here and argued cases before the Supreme Court. In 1858, in the Illinois House chamber, Lincoln delivered his renowned 'House Divided' speech, marking his candidacy for the U.S. Senate. The Old State Capitol also served as the location where Lincoln maintained an office after being elected President. His body rested in state here in May 1865 before being buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery.The building was sold to Sangamon County in 1869 and used as the County Courthouse for almost a century. The state repurchased the building in 1961 and began restoring it to its original appearance. The building was dismantled in 1966 and rebuilt with modern facilities. The public areas were reconstructed to resemble the building's appearance in 1860, the last time Lincoln saw it before leaving for Washington.Today, visitors can explore the meticulously recreated chambers and offices, immersing themselves in the political atmosphere of the mid-19th century.
