Lidice Memorial: A Testament to Resilience

The Lidice Memorial in Crest Hill, Illinois, is a powerful reminder of the tragic events that befell the village of Lidice in Czechoslovakia during World War II. In June 1942, the village was brutally destroyed by Nazi forces as retaliation for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, a high-ranking Nazi official. The village was then wiped off the map.In the wake of this atrocity, the world sought to ensure that Lidice would never be forgotten. Crest Hill, Illinois, became one of several places to adopt the name “Lidice” in an act of defiance and remembrance. In 1942, a local developer, Dominic Romano, renamed his neighborhood in Crest Hill to Lidice and erected a memorial.
