Mount Pulaski Courthouse State Historic Site

The Mount Pulaski Courthouse State Historic Site offers a glimpse into Illinois's past and the early legal career of Abraham Lincoln. Built in 1847-48, the two-story brick courthouse operated as the Logan County seat until 1855. The Greek Revival building, with its pediments and pilasters, stands at the center of Mount Pulaski's public square.After the county seat moved to Lincoln, the building served various roles, including a city hall, school, and post office. In the 1930s, the state of Illinois acquired the courthouse and restored it to its 1850s appearance. Today, visitors can explore the recreated county offices and courtroom on guided tours.As you enter the wide doorway and walk upstairs, you'll find the courtroom familiar to Lincoln. Imagine the farmers and townspeople gathered on the lawn, drawn by legal matters and social interaction. The first floor contains six rooms representing county offices, while the second floor houses the courtroom, jury room, and judge's chambers.
