Discover more about Peoria Zoo

Peoria Zoo, formerly known as Glen Oak Zoo, has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s when a herd of elk was donated to the Peoria Park District. Over the years, the zoo has evolved, with its official dedication taking place in 1897. In 1955, the zoo expanded, constructing the Tropics building. The zoo took on a more professional appearance in the 1970s, emphasizing education, conservation and recreation. The Peoria Zoological Society was formed in 1997. In 2009, the zoo opened its new Africa exhibit, nearly doubling in size, and officially changed its name to Peoria Zoo. Today, the 14-acre zoo is home to nearly 100 species from around the world. Visitors can explore six main exhibit areas: Africa, Australia Walkabout, Asian Trail, Tropics Building, Conservation Center, and Contact Barn. The Africa exhibit features giraffes, zebras, rhinos, lions, and more, all viewed from a boardwalk that provides an immersive experience. The Australia Walkabout allows guests to walk among emus and wallabies. The Asian Trail is home to Amur tigers and Sichuan takins. The Tropics Building showcases primates and reptiles from South America. The Conservation Center houses amphibians, while the Contact Barn allows visitors to interact with domestic animals. Peoria Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and is dedicated to conservation efforts, participating in breeding programs for endangered species. The zoo also offers various educational programs, tours, and special events throughout the year, making it a popular destination for families, school groups, and animal lovers.
