    Weldon Springs State Park is located southeast of Clinton, Illinois. From Clinton, take Route 10 East to Weldon Springs Road. Turn south at Weldon Springs Road and follow the signs for approximately 2 miles to the park entrance. There is ample parking available within the park.

    From the edge of Clinton, follow Route 10 East. Turn south onto Weldon Springs Road and continue for approximately 2 miles. Be aware that Weldon Springs Road is a rural road, so exercise caution and be mindful of traffic. There are no sidewalks available.

    Weldon Springs State Park, located in DeWitt County, Illinois, is a 550-acre park that offers a variety of recreational activities throughout the year. The park's unique landscape features a natural spring, a remnant of the ancient Teays River, which once rivaled the Mississippi in size. This spring feeds Weldon Spring Lake, a 29-acre reservoir that serves as a focal point for many park activities.The park's history dates back to Judge Lawrence Weldon, who opened the area for public picnics before the Civil War. In 1900, he leased the land for development as a Chautauqua assembly, a popular movement that provided education, entertainment, and moral uplift. For two decades, Weldon Springs hosted renowned speakers and entertainers, including William Jennings Bryan, Helen Keller, and President William Howard Taft. The rise of automobiles and movies led to the decline of the Chautauqua, and the Weldon family donated the land to the city of Clinton in 1936. The State of Illinois took ownership in 1948, establishing the park as a recreational area.Weldon Springs State Park offers diverse activities, including fishing, boating, camping, and hiking. Anglers can enjoy fishing for largemouth bass, catfish, and panfish in Weldon Spring Lake. Only electric boat motors are permitted, and boat rentals are available. The park boasts a well-regarded campground with 77 campsites, offering amenities such as electricity, water, and shower buildings. Several trails wind through the park's varied habitats, from woodlands to prairies, providing opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing. The Lakeside Trail, a 2-mile loop around the lake, offers scenic views and interpretive signs. The Beaver Dam Trail is a shorter, 7/8-mile trail ideal for night hikes, where visitors can listen to frogs, insects, and owls. In winter, visitors can enjoy sledding, tobogganing, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing.Visitors can explore the Union School Interpretive Center, a restored one-room schoolhouse that serves as a museum and visitor center. The center features exhibits on local history and natural science, with a hands-on learning approach. The park also features the Veteran's Point Memorial, honoring veterans of the armed forces.
