Getting There

Driving

Cahokia Mounds is located near Collinsville, Illinois, just eight miles from downtown St. Louis. It is accessible via Interstates 55-70 and 255. From I-255, take Exit 24 for Collinsville Road. The site is a short drive from the exit. Free parking is available at the Visitors Center, Monks Mound, and Woodhenge.
Public Transport

While direct public transportation to Cahokia Mounds is limited, the Madison County Transit (MCT) Bus #18 stops at Black Lane and Collinsville Road, about 0.75 miles west of the site. From downtown Collinsville, you can take a taxi to the site; expect a minimum fare of around $5. Keep in mind that there are no sidewalks for the final stretch from Black Lane to the site.

Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, a UNESCO World Heritage site, protects the central section of what was once the largest prehistoric Native American city north of Mexico. Flourishing from 700 to 1400 AD, the Mississippian culture built a metropolis covering 4,000 acres, featuring around 120 earthen mounds. At its peak around 1100 AD, Cahokia's population reached an estimated 10,000-20,000, surpassing that of many European cities at the time.The centerpiece of the site is Monks Mound, the largest prehistoric earthen structure in North America. Rising 100 feet high and covering 14 acres, this massive mound offers panoramic views, including glimpses of the St. Louis skyline. Visitors can climb the 165 steps to the top. The site also features Woodhenge, a reconstructed sun calendar used by the Cahokians to mark the seasons. Reconstructions of the palisade/stockade walls offer a glimpse into the city's defenses.While the Interpretive Center is currently undergoing renovations, the grounds and trails remain open, inviting visitors to explore the ancient landscape.
